Jasper de Keijzer has released a freeware HTML to IPF compiler called HTMIPF.


ICQ/2 version 1.503k has been released (12/22/99). ICQ/2 is a full 32-bit multithreaded OS/2 PM ICQ client application. The update is here.


The Verisign certificates on all versions of Netscape 4.05 and earlier are set to expire on December 31, 1999. IBM has released updated (12/21/99) certficates for those who want to continue using Netscape 2.02 and 4.04. You can also choose to ignore the warning messages without any ill effects. REXX2EXE is a free rexx "compiler" that generates .EXE from .CMD files. This tool has many generation options and allows you to create PM programs (makes using RxMessageBox() easier), standalone programs or smaller programs that require a generated DLL. The code is optionally encrypted and packed so the generated code can be quite small.


Adobe has released (12/13/99) Acrobat 4.0 for Java. The install program will create an AcrobatViewer.cmd file to launch the application. From OS2.org.


Dadaware has gone out of business, and released (12/10/99) Embellish as a free download. This is a graphics editing program.


UAE/2 is a port (12/4/99) of version 0.8.10 Alpha R1 of the Ultimate Amiga Emulator. You can play some Amiga games with it.


A DOSCALL1.DLL patch for use by Process Commander has been placed (12/4/99) on Hobbes. It is a replacement for part of Process Commander's installer, which fails on 3.0 FP 40 and 4.0 FP 12.


Daniela Engert has released (12/3/99) patches for the Yamaha and ESS sound drivers, so that they work with more sound cards, including many PCI variants.


Pretty Pop Software has released (11/29/99) PopCD! version 2.19. It is a Pop Up CD-ROM Object Utility that creates a CD-ROM object on the desktop and opens it when you insert a CD-ROM. From WarpCast.


MaxBase version 2.06 has been released (11/24/99). It is a database suite for Java, with many features: access to local/remote databases; ready-to-run applications such as a DB server, a report writer, a GUI application (with plugins) for managing your data and some utilities; Java Beans, Java and NetRexx classes for the developer; and comprehensive HMTL manuals.


EmTec FTP version 5.07 has been released (11/24/99). It features: support for directories transfer; resume failed downloads; works over firewalls; works with SQUID proxy; upload via proxy; support for 18 types of FTP servers; drag and drop operations; and tree-like server list and bookmarks menu.


QuickFix 1.21, a REXX script to prepare OS/2 fixpacks for application from hard disk using a disk image extraction tool which does CRC validation, has been uploaded (11/17/99) to Hobbes.


TimeKeeper/2 version 1.32 has been released (11/16/99). It is a program that retrieves Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) from a time server using time protocol RFC868 and compares the results to your system time and optionally updates your system time if necessary. It can adjust for Daylight Saving Time if you provide your time zone information.


Martin Hadam reports that dbfREXX has been updated to version 3.15. dbfREXX provides easy to use database functions for REXX programs.


Front ends for Leech and BladeEnc are available (11/3/99). The front end for Leech is at version 1.01, and the front end for BladeEnc is at version 1.06.


IBM has released updated (11/2/99) I2O drivers for SCSI devices. Also available (11/20/98) are I2O drivers for Network cards. To find out more, check out the I2O SIG page.


Version 9.26 of BootOS2 has been released (10/31/99). You can find this new version on Hobbes. BootOS2 is a utility that allows you to build a bootable OS/2 V2, V3 or V4 system using an existing OS/2 V2, V3 or V4 system. The boot system can be installed on either floppies or a hard disk partition. Version 9.26 fixes the SESMGR.DLL problem.


An ODBC driver for mSQL has been released (10/28/99). Also available (8/24/99) is mSQL 2.0.11 build 1. mSQL is a lightweight client/server relational database that earned great popularity as a back-end for web sites. For full information, check out the mSQL PC Home Page. From WarpCast.


Installer/2 is a freesource project for an OS/2 installation package. It features self-installation (ala InstallShield), Config.Sys updating, WPS object creation, logging (for later uninstallation), deleting copied files after cancellation, progress indicator, and completely configurable for each program. Version 2.2.0 is now (10/23/99) on Hobbes.


Valera reports that there is now (10/20/99) an OS/2 version of Wusage 7.0, a shareware program for Web server log analysis.


File Freedom 2.02 has been released as freeware. "File Freedom is a fast, very inexpensive, PM file manager with an uncluttered, easy-to-use interface. It is designed to be a quick and efficient utility that excels in file management and is also easy to use. Yet, it does not skimp on features." The source code is also available now. From WarpCast.


Wave Extraction Utility version 0.5 beta has been released (10/5/99). This command line application extracts .WAV files from other binary files, such as some digital camera images (Kodak DC260+). You can download the latest version from Hobbes.


Hot Corners version 2.2 is now (10/4/99) available. Hot Corners allows you to bring any windows found in the Window List to the foreground by bringing the mouse pointer to a specified screen corner or border, and while holding a certain key combination down. All combinations can be individually setup which means you can have different actions for all possible corner / border / key / button combination. They can optionally be brought to the mouse position if desired, and they can also be pushed in the background or minimized automatically when the mouse leaves the window.


The Virtual Network Computing viewer port has been updated (10/1/99) to version 1.0. VNC is a remote display system which allows you to view a computing 'desktop' environment not only on the machine where it is running, but from anywhere on the Internet and from a wide variety of machine architectures. Version 1.56 of the game B.U.G.S. is now (9/30/99) available. This update is only for the commercial version, not the demo. From WarpCast.


Fortify for OS/2 version 1.4.5 is now (9/30/99) available. This release supports Communicator 4.61, and all previous versions. It will convert from export-grade encryption to 128-bit.


Frank Carlos reports on the latest technology from developerWorks: Courses are now available on Designing beans for visual programming, Visual Programming with beans, XML and Java, Practical transformation using XSLT and XPath, and Bean Markup Language.

Updated stuff on alphaWorks includes: XML Viewer addresses the need for viewing XML data from various perspectives such as the source of the XML, the DTD for the XML, the hierarchical structure of the XML data. Bean Markup Language (BML) is an XML-based component configuration or wiring language customized for the JavaBean component model. LotusXSL implements an XSL processor in Java, and can interface to APIs that conform to the DOM Level 1 specification. Install Toolkit for Java is a program for writing install programs for Java or non-Java programs. IRC Client for Java is an enhanced, Java-based IRC client. In addition to the Java applet, a full Java application version of the IRC Client for Java is available. This version provides full DCC support, transcript saving and logging, and parameter saving. XML TreeDiff is a package of beans that provide the ability to efficiently differentiate and update DOM trees, just like diff and patch differentiate and update data files. Remote AWT for Java implements all AWT APIs without using any native code and in a client-server fashion that is transparent to the Java application.


HP JetAdmin for OS/2 Warp has been updated (9/3/99) to version A.04.01.


TrueSpectra has made available a downloadable version of PhotoGraphics Pro 2.02S until December 31st, 1999. It is an unregistered 30 Day trial copy, but if you send email to support@truespectra.com they will send you a registration key to unlock it. TrueSpectra ceased all updates/sales of PhotoGraphics earlier this year. Thanks to Mark Dodel for the news.


IBM's Tivoli division has made SystemView Agent available for download. This provides some DMI (desktop management interface) support, namely DMI 1.1. If you're looking for a means to manage the clients on your LAN, or just query information about your system, this is one option. From WarpCast.


InnoVal Systems Solutions, Inc. has withdrawn the following products from marketing and support: Post Road Mailer for OS/2, J Street Mailer for Java, and Web Willy Watch for OS/2. Anyone may download free copies of these products from their online store. In addition, anyone may freely distribute executable copies of the software through online software repositories and websites. If you distribute the Post Road Mailer you must also distribute a serial number to allow a user to activate the product; you may use serial number 31571728. The Crystal Space project now (8/27/99) has OS/2 executables available. Crystal Space is an open source 3D engine which can be compiled for multiple platforms. It supports true 6DOF, colored lights, mipmapping, portals, mirrors, alpha transparency, reflecting surfaces, 3D sprites, scripting, 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit display support, and Glide and OpenGL hardware acceleration.


Frank Carlos reports on the latest technology from alphaWorks: XML Parser for Java, Early Access release, has preliminary support for W3C XML Schema Language and access to the DTD via DOM. TaskGuide Viewer is an XML-based wizard for creating wizards. It now features a Swing interface. There is a report on the XML Developer's Conference, the difference between JavaBeans and Enterprise JavaBeans, and an FAQ on EJBs.

Version 1.06c of the Sythetic Audio Library (SEAL) has been released (8/12/99). It is a port of the popular DOS, Windows, Linux, and now OS/2 audio mixer library SEAL. It allows applications to easily incorporate streamed audio and playing various types of module files (MOD, MTM, S3M, and XM) into OS/2 native applications, using MMPM or DART. Frank Carlos reports on the latest technology from alphaWorks: The CommonRules library provides framework and error handling for interoperable e-business. There are a couple online courses available, a tutorial on XML and Introduction to Java Server Pages.


Version 1.1.7 of the ESS Solo 1 PCI sound card drivers, along with ESS Warp Mix, are now (8/8/99) available from Quasar BBS as O2ENSL17.ZIP and WMIXIN.ZIP.


Thomas Dierig reports on an "anti-browser" called Net-O-Mat. It can retrieve almost all types of data that resides on the Internet, including RealAudio, jpegs, gifs, aiff, wav, html, xml and plain text. There is an OS/2 version of this Java program available (8/3/99) for download.


Midnight Commander version 4.5.6 has been ported (8/1/99) to OS/2. This text mode file manager has mouse support, and has virtual file systems for tar files, ftp sites, and more.


The XVNC server has been updated (7/27/99) to version 1.01. Combined with the VNC viewer for PM, you can get a working X environment on your PM desktop. It can be used to display local or remote X applications. From WarpCast.


Now (7/23/99) available on Hobbes are programs for various UPS models: OPTI-SAFE+ version 3.50 for Opti-UPS, PowerChute Plus version 4.2.3 for APC UPS, and PowerAlert Plus version 10.1 for TrippLite UPS.


Some stuff has been recently updated at alphaWorks: TSpaces is a set of network communication buffers, APIs, and classes that allows heterogeneous, Java-enabled devices to exchange data with little programming effort. Self Voicing Kit enables automatic speaking of Java applications. The SVK features the IBM Access Engine, a new technology that exploits the accessibility features of a Java application. It now (7/14/99) supports JDK 1.2.2. SpeechML is a markup language for building distributed network-based conversational applications.

MED, the Programmer's text editor, has been updated (6/30/99) to version 1.26.


Frank Carlos reports on the latest technology from alphaWorks: TeXML provides a path from XML into the TeX formatting language. easySwing bean suite is a set of components that extend commonly used Swing components, making them easier to use in visual programming environments.

Emerald Mail is a 100% Java, multithreaded, Internet e-mail client. It has been designed from the ground up for maximum configurablity and ease of use. It's features include: multiple account support, nested folders, mail filtering, MIME compliance, support for POP3 and SMTP, a powerful address manager, and SOCKS V4 support. It is now on version 1.22.


IBM has updated (6/15/99) the drivers for RAID adapters.


Outside In for Java provides viewers for Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, so that any Java-enabled platform can access Microsoft Office documents. From WarpCast.


Version 1.2 of a GUI frontend for the SETI@Home OS/2 client has been released (6/15/99).


PMSANE version 0.52, a PM frontend to SANE, is available (6/12/99). It is based on SANE 0.74, and works with HP, Epson and Microtek scanners. Mustek support is included but not completely functional. This release includes minor fixes for Epson scanners and updates to the latest version of EMX Runtime and WPTOOLS.


An OS/2 port of Turbo Vision 2.0 C++ from UNIX has been released (6/11/99). It works best with Borland C++ 2.0 for OS/2. Anyone looking for a character mode programming library may be interested in this, especially if they used TV in DOS.


Frank Carlos reports on the latest technology from alphaWorks: IBM has launched developerWorks, which includes news, tools and code, standards, and education. developerWorks is organized into zones focusing on Java technology, XML, Security, as well as resources for Web development. Also available on developerWorks will be all of the Java and XML alphaWorks technologies. A Linux zone is being assembled right now and will be going up very soon. Coming soon to developerWorks are the following open source JavaBeans suites: FTP JavaBean Suite implements the FTP protocol, making it easy to include file transfer functions in your applications; POP3 suite of Javabeans provides applications with the ability to receive e-mail; SMTP suite of Javabeans enables exchange of mail between hosts within or across networks; SNMP JavaBeans provide an implementation of the SNMP Protocol, the standardized network management framework for enabling the monitoring and control of a network.

easyXML Bean Suite provides the functionality to Java applications for processing XML documents. Xplorer is a Java application that can be used to search XML files, validate XML files and view the valid XML files in XML viewer. DDbE, Data Descriptors by Example, accepts well formed XML documents as input and constructs a DTD. It can be used in Business to Business applications that need to automatically generate DTDs for XML message validation. Unicode Normalizer can transform any String object into the Unicode canonical composed and decomposed forms. This is useful for sorting and searching, since any two canonically equivalent strings have identical normalized forms.


Assistant/2 (the successor of Extended Clipboard/2) is a WPS extension which is designed to make work with OS/2 more comfortable in various ways. It includes an Extended Clipboard, Drag&Drop pieces of text from one application to another, keyboard and mouse events can be recorded with the integrated macro recorder, you can assign a hotkey or a sequence of keys (hottext) to clips and macros, and create flexible configurable popup menus which are accessable from almost every PM application by hotkey (mouse button). nVidia has released (6/2/99) OS/2 drivers for the Riva128, TNT, and TNT2. They are GRADD based drivers. From Loren Bandiera's OS/2 News and Rumors.


Xit version 2.6 has been released (5/13/99). It has several new features.


CAD/Off is a small utility that disables the CTRL-ALT-DEL keys for rebooting and enables them again after system shutdown allowing to reboot the system then. CAD/Off is freeware. Version 1.01 has been released (5/10/99), and includes the source code. From WarpCast.


Sun has updated the HotJava browser to version 3.0, but unfortunately have gone back to their old ways of releasing platform-specific distributions. An OS/2 package has been put together and released (5/7/99) on Hobbes.


ERIC is a puzzle solving game similar to Boulderdash. It is now (5/6/99) on version 1.01. From WarpCast.


The only FREE OS/2 faxing solution, "fax," version 1.03 is available (5/1/99). It contains command line solutions for receiving and sending faxes, making an answering machine, and more. From WarpCast.


Frank Carlos reports on the latest technology from alphaWorks: XML Productivity Kit is a companion technology to the XML Parser in Java which provides the next level of programming resources needed to quickly build and deploy robust XML applications using the Java language. PatML is a pattern / match replacement tool for XML documents. It is a rule based specification language in which the user can specify how an XML document can be transformed for the sake of browsing (converted to HTML) or other purposes. XML BeanMaker is a software tool written in Java to generate Java beans out of XML Schema files (DTD files) automatically. XML Editor Maker is a software tool written in Java to generate Visual editors out of XML Schema files (DTD files) automatically.

Sander Nyman points out something Lotus WordPro users will want to check out: Tink Bar for Lotus Word Pro is an EXCELLENT utility which adds a Smart Icon bar containing a variety of added functionality, and ease of use to Word Pro. Be sure to go to the BOTTOM of the Tink Bar page under the "Special note for OS/2 Warp users" section, and click on the "available" link to download the OS/2 installer version of Tink Bar. Tink's pages also include some VERY useful information, and links for Lotus Smart Suite users. Also check out the Fink Bar. This is yet another bar that adds functions to Word Pro.


The Amiga RealAudio player has been used to create an OS/2 port. It has been updated (4/22/99) to version 0.02, which now supports streaming. Note that it will only work on some RealAudio files. From WarpCast.


Frank Carlos reports on the latest technology from alphaWorks: Performance Trace Data Visualizer is a Java application that can be used for performance analysis of applications running on the AS/400. Thread bean suite can be used in any application where one or more time consuming tasks need to be performed on different threads. JAX is a Java application packaging tool that reduces the distribution size of a Java application.


HyperCD beta 2 has been released (4/15/99). HyperCD is a combined CD and MP3 player with a database, graphic equalizer, and CDDB support. MP3 encoding and a Netscape plugin may be in future releases.


The German "Independent OS/2 Developers" have some nice, free programs available: PMConverter has been updated (4/11/99) to version 0.06 beta. This MP3 frontend connects to the CDDB database on the Internet to determine the title and names of the tracks on your CDs. MoonPlay version 0.02b (8/30/98) is a WAV player, and SpriteEd version 0.1.2 (1/11/99) is a Bitmap Editor.


Dialip version 1.543 has been released (4/10/99). Now all features but one are testable in the unregistered version. Faster multiple pop id interface, can be scheduled to dial, connect, transfer email, run any programs you tell it (to do other internet things like download web pages, etc...), disconnect; all without intervention.


Nice is a program that allows you to dynamically change priority of many processes in OS/2. Version 0.07 build 15 has been released (4/10/99), along with the source code, under the GPL.


Redir version 2.0 has been released (4/10/99). This is a port of the Linux port redirector, which allows you to redirect local TCP/IP ports to another port on a local or remote system.


QuickCam Viewer for OS/2 version 2.02 for the Connectix Quickcam (Pro, VC, Color, and Greyscale) cameras, is now available (4/4/99). It's features include: Auto-detects parallel port and port-capabilities; Access to camera controls via sliders; B&W image enhancement with Gamma-corrected palette also on slider; Low-light filter for speck removal on colour cameras; Auto-exposure calibration to suit current lighting conditions; Any portion of the image can be selected for viewing; Image can optionally be stretched to fill entire picture window; Can save images as BMP or JPEG file, copied to the clipboard or printed; Supports Drag 'n Drop - picture can be dragged from the viewer; Allows putting custom text or just date and time stamps onto saved images; Configurable Settings, Image/Camera and Others saved to ini-file; Desktop Lockup support! Use a live picture for a screen-saver; and On-line context-sensitive help.


Craft version 3.5 was ported (3/29/99) for XFree86/OS2. This is a game similar to Warcraft, which supports up to 3 players and computer opponents. Thanks to Klaus Staedtler for the news.


AICQ, Another ICQ clone, has been updated (3/25/99) to version 0.016. This command line program has Win1251<->CP866 recoding, and implements version 2 of the ICQ protocol. From WarpCast.


Martin Hadam reports that Warp Globe is now (3/19/99) on version 1.2. Warp Globe displays a globe with the location of OS/2 users worldwide.


Frank Carlos reports on the latest technology from alphaWorks: Graph Foundation Classes for Java makes use of the system dictionary to store state. Flexibility in graph drawing and layout is achieved by a "plug-in" architecture. Classes for drawing vertices and edges are programmed to satisfy an interface recognized by Graph Foundation Classes for Java. TFTP Server for Java is now (3/17/99) at version 1.19.


An OS/2 port of the Quickcam Capture Utility and Library is now (3/18/99) available. It is a fast Black and White Quickcam capture utility and library. This is a port of qcam 0.91 from Linux and requires EMX and XF86Sup.sys installed.


Semtex version 1.0c has been released (3/15/99). Semtex is a multiplayer game for 2-4 players, similar to Bomberman.


FTP IFS version 0.04 has been released (3/12/99). It is an FTP client made as a File System Driver, which gives you the ability to map ftp hosts to drive letters. It now supports MetaAliases, ftp-to-ftp proxy mode, full read/write, default settings, and new listings support.


n512dasd version 001 (3/8/99) is a filter driver which allows access to removable media with 1024 and 2048 bytes/sector.


The game BlobCity (formerly SimBlob) has been updated (3/8/99). BlobCity is a single player game where you are playing against the environment (floods, fires, volcanos, etc.). The source code to this game is now in the hands of OS/2 NetL@bs.


PackageWizard is an OS/2 hosted wizard program for making a Java installer for Java programs. From a single installation package you can install your application on multiple platforms, and even create icons on the desktop for launching your applications. It features: Create desktop folders and program icons; Create program icons in the startup folder; generate installation executables for OS/2, Windows 95/98/NT, and a single class file for Java installations; display an installation readme file and a license agreement before proceeding to the installation; modify the system configuration file (CONFIG.SYS). It is now on version 1.02.


Some tools for manipulating Microsoft Word files have been released recently. Word2html is a program that converts Microsoft Word 6+ documents (.DOC) to HTML. Word2x converts Microsoft Word 6+ documents (.DOC) to Plain-Text, HTML or LaTeX. It is now (2/16/99) on release EX3, which is based on the Unix version 0.003.


An OS/2 support package for Win32OS2 and Quake2 for supporting the K6 3DNow! instructions is now (2/15/99) on Hobbes. It requires a K6-2 CPU and a VooDoo2 accelerator card.


Tekram has released updated (2/8/99) drivers for the DC-390F/U/U2, DC-310(U), and DC-390 SCSI cards.


Blue Sky Innovations has released (2/1/99) Power Boot v3.0. New features include: Allows you to prevent Power Boot from showing non-bootable partitions; Default Boot Partition; Boot Profiles: Profiles are partitions which are hidden or visible depending on which partition you are booting from. Password modes: now, you can select whether you want to use the password to prevent access to Power Boot, or to prevent access to options; configurable dumbness level; set drive letters at the partition level for HPFS partitions.


GLCube 2.0 for OS/2 OpenGL is now (1/21/99) available from Aquila Technologies. GLCube is a Rubik's cube game with advanced OpenGL features such as lighting, shadows and texture mapping. It's features include: Textured cube faces, Background image support, Sound effects, 3D lighting and shadows, Animation effects, Both keyboard and mouse control for cube manipulation, Automated cube solving, Computer auto-play mode, and FPS counter for benchmarking. Frank Carlos reports on the latest technology from alphaWorks: XML Enabler is a servlet that can successfully implement stylesheets such as the LotusXSL technology. Using the XML Enabler, developers with any kind of browser can now send requests to a servlet and as the servlet responds, it formats the data using different XSL stylesheets. The system administrator can then configure which stylesheets go with which browser types. DataCraft provides an XML view of databases and enables publishing XML forms to the Web.


xfsttos2 is a port of xfstt to OS/2. It allows you to use TrueType fonts with XFree86 for OS/2. You can use your TrueType fonts from Win-OS/2 or any other Windows system. Includes documentation on how to get it to work with IBM's INETD.


Attribute Manager V.0.76.51 beta has been released (1/2/99). It is "a small PM application that allows to easily manage ordinary and extended attributes (.SUBJECT, .COMMENT, .KEYPHRASES)."


Beta version 1.9c of CUSeeMe/2 is now (1/1/99) available. New in this release: WebCam support; change plugin while connected to a reflector; no longer reports audio codec information to reflector, when audio is disabled; can send in MJPG mode, even if you only have a Connectix gray cam; Bug when importing NICKNAME ini with DNS entries fixed; Shutdown bug fixed, occurs when no plugin has been loaded; Automatic pruning of chat; Automatic dectection of nickname change.
